CA was an experience. Living in an area perpetually at war was something that hardens one or destroys one, sometimes a bit of both. I still recall the first time I went back to Empire after being in Curse space for months, and that weird feeling of seeing 100+ neutrals in local and trying to remeber that I wasn't in a fleet action.
I still remember my first combat in Curse, back before shield tanking got nerfed, and I was a complete newb. Ota was corp mining in the Catch area, when a couple Xetic pilots were flying inties harassing the area. I was flying a Mauller, and I started trying to drop a bm on their warp in point.
I succeeded too, I think. They may have been watching me, and simply intercepted me when I can out of warp somewhere, I'm not sure. Either way, there I was in my noobness with an inty and a frigate beeting on me. I also discovered I had forgotten to set my shield booster of auto-repeat. Oops. Somwhow I managed to gang someone else who got there and killed them before I died.
Then there was my first fleet action. I was in a 10MN Rifter with tackling kit. Duke was command. We jumped in on a camped gate, and one of our battleships decloaked before we were ready to attack, and got decimated. It was terrible to watch him going down while we were under orders to hold cloak. We did anyways, and when we were set, we decloaked and hit them hard.
That was not long after Amarr got the 10% cap reduction bonus, so lasers were being used, and I still remember the missile trails and laser beams streaking across the battle. And being a tackler, I was right in the middle of it for the entire fight.
The ghost fleets were my favorite, though. Tearing across the map with just frigates and dualie cruisers ganking anything not fast enough to escape us. I remember the first one I flew in, we stayed a bit to long in CFS space, and got caught by a frigate killer fleet. My Vigil got nailed by a gankageddon, and I was flitting about in pod, when we heard Duke was bringing in a battleship fleet to extract us, and we needed to keep the CFS busy until they got there. I ended up playing Cat and Pod with a Taranis, in an effort to keep them from looking at the map. It worked, too, and a fleet of battleships jumped in on their frigate killers, and nailed at least two of them. I nearly got podded by my own side that time, lol.
Now it's just so much more peaceful in the galaxy, and I don't really know what to do with myself anymore.
